Road Shader
work: Custom road shader development, shader network with switches and multi-layer controls, Maya attribute GUI
position: Head of CGI
role: CG Supervisor / Main 3D Artist
Custom multi-layer road shader developed over several months. A complex shader network with switches and multiple layers, connected to a Maya shader attribute panel for clean GUI control. Developed for Arnold, later extended to VRay. Features include blended hi-res asphalt textures eliminating UV tiling, configurable road markings (European/US), integrated puddle controls, and sliders for all material parameters accessible directly in the Maya UI. Used in production for the Audi Forest project.
Case Study
Goal:
Develop a production-ready custom road shader with intuitive GUI controls for automotive and environment shots.
Approach:
Multi-layer shader network built in Maya with a custom attribute panel for clean GUI control. Features blended hi-res textures with seamless tiling, switchable road markings for different regions, integrated puddle parameters. Initially developed for Arnold, later extended to VRay. Tools: Maya, Arnold, VRay, Python (for GUI).
Result:
Production-ready road shader used in the Audi Forest project, with all material parameters adjustable through a clean Maya GUI.
My Contribution:
Sole development: shader network architecture across Arnold and VRay, texture blending system, GUI panel design and implementation.
