Hamburg by Night
work: Automotive rendering, VRED lookdev, camera matching, HDRI retouch, post-production
position: 3D Artist
role: CG Supervisor / Main 3D Artist
Classic automotive rendering project showing Hamburg at night with a Mercedes. The car asset was developed and shaded in a separate VRED scene, then referenced into the main scene with camera matching done in Maya. Backplates and HDRIs were retouched and prepared. Shading and rendering were done with a colleague under my direction and scene setup. The photographer emphasized that lens flares on street lamps should appear natural — more like how the human eye perceives light bloom rather than stylized lens flares. Reflections in water puddles were matched and rendered as a separate layer for post-production compositing. Post-production was primarily handled by my colleague with my assistance. Tools: Maya, VRED, Photoshop.
Case Study
Goal:
Atmospheric nighttime automotive visual of a Mercedes in Hamburg, emphasizing natural light bloom and realistic reflections.
Approach:
The Mercedes asset was developed in a dedicated VRED lookdev scene, referenced into the main scene with Maya camera matching. Backplates and HDRIs were retouched. Shading and rendering shared with a colleague under my direction. Lens flares on street lamps were treated as subtle natural light bloom per the photographer's direction. Puddle reflections were rendered as a separate layer for post. Post-production by my colleague with my assistance. Tools: Maya, VRED, Photoshop.
Result:
Final automotive visual delivered to the photographer.
My Contribution:
Scene setup and direction, VRED lookdev (shared), camera matching in Maya, HDRI and backdrop retouch, post-production assistance.
